The Battle

History & Significance

While Aethelflaed built the north Stafford burh, Edward coordinated the construction of a second burh south of Stafford. This pattern of twin burhs at river crossings — seen also at Hertford and Buckingham — was a systematic approach to controlling strategic water crossings. The Staffordshire burhs formed part of the frontier fortification line before the offensive into the Five Boroughs.
