The Battle

History & Significance

From 1333 to 1341 Edinburgh Castle was the key English position in southern Scotland. Andrew of Moray, as Guardian, repeatedly attempted to isolate and reduce it. In 1337 his operations around Edinburgh were intense enough to be noted in chronicle sources. The castle held, but Scottish forces dominated the surrounding countryside. The seven-year English occupation of Edinburgh Castle was the central military problem of the Second War of Independence until its recovery in 1341.
