History & Significance

Robert Bruce's seizure of Dumfries Castle in February 1306 — very shortly after his murder of John Comyn in the Greyfriars Church at Dumfries — was his first open act of rebellion. Having killed his main rival in the church, Bruce immediately seized the castle to secure the town. This impulsive act committed him to the rebellion that would eventually win Scottish independence. The murder of Comyn was the true starting point of Bruce's war.
