History & Significance

After defeating Mercia and receiving submissions from all kingdoms south of the Humber, Egbert led his army north to Dore on the Northumbrian border and received the submission of the Northumbrian king there. The Chronicle records that Egbert was the eighth Bretwalda. The submission was nominal and Northumbrian independence was quickly reasserted.
