The Battle

History & Significance

Offa of Mercia defeated Cynewulf of Wessex at Bensington (Benson in Oxfordshire), securing Mercian dominance over the upper Thames and Berkshire. This was part of Offa's systematic expansion that made him the most powerful king in England. His subsequent construction of Offa's Dyke and correspondence with Charlemagne placed him on a European stage. The victory made Mercia unchallenged master of England south of the Humber.
