History & Significance

Isurium Brigantum (Aldborough, near Boroughbridge) was the administrative capital of the Brigantian civitas. Its substantial defensive walls — sections of which survive today — were built or massively reinforced during the third century, a period of repeated usurpation and barbarian pressure. The construction of these walls implies real or anticipated military threat. The town lay in the heart of Yorkshire at the confluence of roads from York, Catterick, and Tadcaster, making its defence strategically important.
