History & Significance

Aethelwold — Alfred the Great's nephew who had allied with the East Anglian Danes against Edward the Elder — was killed in this battle along with Eohric, the Danish king of East Anglia. Though the Danes won tactically, the loss of both leaders fatally weakened East Anglian Danish resistance. Edward the Elder eventually reconquered all of the Danelaw; this battle was a crucial step.
