The Battle

History & Significance

Following Leslie's surprise cavalry attack on Montrose's camp at Philiphaugh on 13 September 1645, Covenanting forces pursued the routed Royalists across the Ettrick valley. The Irish soldiers who had surrendered on promise of quarter were subsequently massacred on the orders of Presbyterian ministers attached to the army. The massacre of the Irish camp followers including women and children was among the most controversial acts of the Scottish Civil War.
