The Battle

History & Significance

The Kentish rising of 1648 spread along the coast from Faversham to Deal and Sandwich. Royalist forces seized the Downs castles and were supported by the mutinous Parliamentary fleet. Coastal engagements preceded Fairfax driving the rising inland.
