History & Significance

As the Armada sailed up the Channel in August 1588, the Kent and Sussex coasts were placed on full alert. Militia musters were held at Chatham, Dover and along the Sussex coast. Beacon chains were lit from the Lizard to London in a matter of hours. The county levies assembled at coastal points from Beachy Head to the North Foreland. Though the Armada never landed, the mobilisation demonstrated England's improved coastal defence capacity compared to the 1370s. The Kent muster was the largest in the county's history to that point.
