Parliamentary forces attempting to pressure the Royalist garrison of Ruthin Castle in Denbighshire were repulsed in a skirmish outside the town walls in 1644. The Royalist garrison of Ruthin conducted an active defence including sorties against approaching Parliamentary detachments. The castle remained in Royalist hands until its eventual surrender in April 1646.
