The Battle

History & Significance

General George Monck marched his army from Berwick on Tweed southward to London in January-February 1660, crossing into England on 2 January. His army of approximately 6,000 veteran troops was the decisive military force that made the Restoration possible. Monck's march was essentially bloodless — Lambert's intercepting force dissolved — but it was the most consequential military movement of the Interregnum period.
