The Battle

History & Significance

Following the collapse of the Northern Rising, Lord Hunsdon and Sir Henry Clifford led English forces north in pursuit of the fled rebel earls, crossing the border into Scotland to pressure the Scottish regency to surrender the fugitives. The pursuit northward in early 1570 was part of the broader English operation to extinguish the rebellion and punish those who had aided it. The earls of Northumberland and Westmorland had fled to Scotland where they were harboured by Scottish border lords — a source of continuing diplomatic friction.
