History & Significance

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that after the main Battle of Tettenhall (Wednesfield), the English continued to pursue and kill the retreating Danes. This pursuit phase was militarily important: it converted a battlefield victory into strategic destruction by preventing the Danish forces from regrouping. The thoroughness of the English pursuit after Tettenhall may explain why the Northumbrian Danes posed no further major military threat for a generation.
