History & Significance

Before the main battles of 1016, Edmund Ironside marched into Mercia multiple times to organise resistance and relieve Danish pressure on Mercian communities. The Chronicle records Edmund going into Mercia and driving out Danish forces on at least three occasions. Edmund's persistent campaigning demonstrated his energy and personal courage and gave the English cause continuing momentum despite setbacks. He eventually forced Eadric to rejoin the English side, though Eadric's loyalty was always suspect.
