The Battle

History & Significance

Parliamentary Colonel Thomas Mytton stormed Shrewsbury on the night of 22 February 1645. Parliamentary troops scaled the town walls in the dark while a diversionary attack drew the garrison attention. The sentinels were overwhelmed silently and the gates opened before the garrison could organise resistance. The speed of the operation meant minimal casualties for the attackers.
