History & Significance

Charlotte de la Trémoille, Countess of Derby, defended Lathom House for nearly five months with 300 men against Parliamentary forces of 2,000. She refused all summons to surrender and conducted bold sorties. Rupert relieved it on his march to Marston Moor. The second siege in 1645 ended in the house's fall and partial demolition.
