History & Significance

The Monmouth Rebellion of 1685 attracted a small number of Welsh Protestant supporters, particularly from Monmouthshire which bordered the rebellion zone. Several Welshmen crossed the Severn to join Monmouth's army. After the defeat at Sedgemoor, Welsh participants were among those hunted by James II forces. The Judge Jeffreys Bloody Assizes included a circuit through the Marches that intimidated Welsh sympathisers.
