The Battle

History & Significance

Leonard Dacre rose in revolt in February 1570 after the Northern Rising had already been suppressed, believing he could exploit the unsettled north. He clashed with Lord Hunsdon's forces at the River Gelt near Carlisle in one of the last military actions of the northern rebellion period. Dacre was defeated and fled to Scotland. The pursuit around Carlisle confirmed crown control of the western border.
