The Battle

History & Significance

The Yorkshire coastal watch at Spurn Head in 1545 extended the national alert to the Humber estuary, the most significant indentation of the east coast north of the Thames. A French force that evaded the Channel defences and sailed north could potentially use the Humber as a base for operations against the north of England. The Spurn Head watch was the northernmost element of the comprehensive English coastal alert maintained throughout the 1545 campaign.
