The Battle

History & Significance

Following his catastrophic defeat at Ellendun, Beornwulf attempted to recover by crushing an East Anglian revolt only to be killed there. His successor Ludeca was also killed by the East Angles the following year. The rapid collapse of Mercian power after Ellendun demonstrated how the kingdom had depended on military dominance to hold its subject peoples.
