The Battle

History & Significance

Camber Castle demonstrated its strategic value in 1545 when French naval forces that had been raiding along the Sussex coast chose not to attempt Rye harbour, deterred by the artillery of the Device Fort. The success of Camber Castle in protecting Rye vindicated Henry VIII decision to expand the original blockhouse into a full artillery fortress, and Rye remained undamaged during the 1545 campaign while Brighton and Seaford both suffered French raids.
