The Battle

History & Significance

Between 806 and the Viking Great Army in 866, Northumbria saw almost continuous political violence. Eight kings were killed or deposed. This internal weakness made Northumbria easy prey for the Great Heathen Army. The Bamburgh-based Bernician lords eventually emerged as the surviving English power in the far north

Forces Involved

Northumbrian factions: c. 200–800 per side; sustained civil conflict with shifting alliances 806–866.
