The Battle

History & Significance

After Camulodunum fell, Roman forces systematically occupied the Catuvellauni heartland north of the Thames. The Catuvellauni, most powerful tribe in pre-Roman Britain under Cunobelinus, were rapidly subjugated. Their capital at Verulamium became a municipium — an unusually rapid elevation suggesting cooperation from the tribal aristocracy.
