The Battle

History & Significance

Hermitage Castle in Liddesdale was the key to controlling the western approach to Scotland from England. William Douglas — one of the most aggressive border commanders of the fourteenth century — wrested it from English control. The castle became a Douglas stronghold and later passed to the Hepburns. Mary Queen of Scots famously rode to Hermitage and back in a single day to visit the wounded Bothwell — nearly dying of the exertion.
