The Battle

History & Significance

Constantine II of Scotland allied with Eadred of Bernicia to challenge the Viking warlord Ragnall at the Tyne. Both sides suffered heavily but Ragnall held the field and went on to seize York and control Northumbria. The battle demonstrated the Norse capacity to hold their gains in northern England even against a combined Scottish and Northumbrian alliance. Constantine survived to fight another day and eventually forced Viking recognition of his authority.
