History & Significance

Montrose — still fighting for the Covenanters in 1639 — seized the bridge over the Dee after several days of fighting. The victory secured Aberdeen for the Covenant during the First Bishops' War. Montrose would later switch sides and campaign brilliantly for the Royalists from the same city.
