The Battle

History & Significance

As the Royalist Essex rising of 1648 moved northward toward Colchester, Parliamentary cavalry under Colonel Whalley intercepted the Royalist rearguard at Braintree. A brisk cavalry action at Braintree was won by the Royalists who forced the Parliamentary horse back before continuing their march to Colchester where they were subsequently besieged.
