The Battle

History & Significance

The Battle of Dussindale ended Kett's Rebellion. Warwick used German mercenaries — professional soldiers from the continent — to give his army the edge needed to break the rebels. The slaughter was extensive: up to 3,000 men were killed in the battle and the subsequent pursuit. Robert Kett was captured hiding under a bush, taken to London for trial, and then returned to Norfolk to be hanged in chains from Norwich Castle, where his body rotted for months as a warning.
