History & Significance

After their victory at Dollar in 875, the Danish Great Army overwintered in Scotland and conducted further operations against the weakened Picts. The death of King Constantine I at Dollar left the Picts without effective leadership at a crucial moment. The period 875-880 saw the final dissolution of the Pictish kingdom and the emergence of the Kingdom of Alba under Kenneth MacAlpin's successors.
