The Battle

History & Significance

The Northern Rising extended into the English West March when some Cumberland and Westmorland gentry declared for the rebel earls in late 1569. The Carlisle garrison remained loyal and the city was not threatened as seriously as in some previous northern rebellions. However, West March rebel activity required the diversion of royal forces from the main suppression campaign in the east, delaying Sussex's operations. The western dimension of the rising illustrated the geographic reach of northern Catholic discontent and its roots in specific local grievances about the governance of the western border.
