History & Significance

Kett's rebels forced entry into Norwich through Bishop's Gate after the city refused to admit them. The taking of the second city of England by rebel forces was an enormous psychological blow to the Tudor government and demonstrated the scale and effectiveness of the East Anglian uprising. The rebels used Norwich as their base while maintaining their main camp at Mousehold Heath.
