History & Significance

Before the disaster of Philiphaugh, Montrose was based in and around Selkirk, apparently believing himself safe in the Borders. His scouts were inadequate and he had no warning of Leslie's approach. The occupation of Selkirk and the subsequent shock of the surprise attack at Philiphaugh a few miles away make this location significant in understanding how Montrose's campaign ended.
