The Battle

History & Significance

Eric Bloodaxe was betrayed and killed at Stainmore on the Yorkshire-Westmorland border by Maccus, son of Anlaf, and his associates, at the instigation of Oswulf, High-Reeve of Bamburgh. The death of Eric ended the Viking kingdom of Jorvik permanently. Yorkshire came under the permanent rule of the English crown. It was the last time a Viking king ruled in Yorkshire.
