Cooling Castle in the Hoo Peninsula was the seat of Lord Cobham, whose sons were involved in the Wyatt conspiracy. During the rebellion in January-February 1554, the castle became a focus of Kentish rebel activity in the area north of Rochester before Wyatt concentrated his forces. The Cobham connection to Cooling made the castle a watching point for both rebel and royal forces in the early days of the revolt.
