History & Significance

Mohuns Ottery in east Devon was the scene of a skirmish during the eastern advance of Lord Russells relief force in late July 1549. Rebel outriders clashed with royal cavalry in the Otter valley area as Russell probed westward. The action, while small, was part of the preliminary fighting that preceded the main battles at Fenny Bridges and Clyst Heath that broke the western rebellion.
