The Battle

History & Significance

Immediately after killing John Comyn at the Greyfriars, Bruce moved swiftly to seize Dumfries Castle and its English garrison. The capture gave him control of Dumfriesshire and vital supplies and horses for his race to Scone for coronation. The efficiency with which Bruce moved from murder to castle seizure to royal proclamation suggests the killing of Comyn was premeditated, whatever its proximate cause. Within six weeks of Dumfries, Bruce had been crowned King of Scots at Scone.
