The Battle

History & Significance

Colin Campbell of Glenure, government factor enforcing post-Culloden evictions in Appin Stewart country, was shot from ambush near Ballachulish. James Stewart of the Glen was convicted and hanged, probably as a scapegoat, in what many historians regard as a judicial murder. The real killer was never identified though suspicion fell on Allan Breck Stewart. Robert Louis Stevenson immortalised the incident in Kidnapped.
