History & Significance

Ealdorman Aethelwulf of Berkshire defeated a Danish force at Englefield, killing a Danish jarl. This was the opening engagement of the great 870-871 campaign. The West Saxon success encouraged King Aethelred and Alfred to march to Reading, where they suffered a reverse four days later.
