History & Significance

The Lincolnshire rising of October 1536 was the first phase of the Pilgrimage of Grace, beginning in Louth with crowds seizing the church goods to prevent their confiscation by royal commissioners. The rebellion spread rapidly across Lincolnshire, attracting clergy, gentry and commons. The rebels made demands against the dissolution of monasteries and religious changes. Henry VIII\'s uncompromising response and the arrival of royal forces caused the Lincolnshire rising to collapse before the larger Yorkshire rising under Robert Aske was suppressed.

Forces Involved

Royal: Norfolk\'s forces from the south. Rebels: Lincolnshire commons, clergy and gentry — estimated at 10,000-40,000
