The Battle

History & Significance

During and after the Northern Rising of 1569, border lords including the Dacres used the general disorder to conduct raids into the East March and Cumbria for cattle and spoil. These raids blurred the distinction between rebellion and ordinary border reiving, complicating the government's response. The Dacre border raiding continued into early 1570 and contributed to the context for Leonard Dacre's formal revolt in February of that year.
