History & Significance

Æthelwulf and Æthelbald fought the greatest Viking army yet seen in England at Aclea (probably Ockley in Surrey) and inflicted the greatest slaughter ever recorded on a Viking force in England to that date. The Chronicle says they made the greatest slaughter of a heathen force that we have heard tell of. The victory temporarily checked the Viking escalation.
