The Battle

History & Significance

Colonel Richard Norton's large Parliamentary assault on Basing House in 1644 was another costly failure. The house's massive earthwork outworks (added to the medieval castle and Elizabethan mansion) proved formidable. The garrison under the Marquess of Winchester — who declared "Aimez Loyauté" (Love Loyalty) — continued to hold out. It required Cromwell himself with heavy artillery to finally storm it in 1645.
