History & Significance

Aylesbury was a key Parliamentary stronghold in Buckinghamshire and one of the main bases for Parliamentary operations against Oxford. The Royalists made several attempts to capture it — notably a major assault in November 1642 — but it held firm. Its garrison tied down significant Royalist forces and provided a base for the cavalry actions that characterised the Oxford theatre.
