History & Significance

Æthelwulf and Ealdorman Ealhhere of Kent fought a Viking force attempting to raid the Sussex coast in 845, achieving a significant victory. The Chronicle records they made great slaughter and won the victory. This Sussex coast action was one of several West Saxon defensive successes in the 840s that prevented Viking raiding from becoming permanent occupation.
