History & Significance

A second Sanquhar Declaration was posted in May 1685 by James Renwick and the United Societies at the Sanquhar market cross, this time disowning James VII. The declaration was posted in the market town of Sanquhar in Dumfriesshire in a deliberate act of armed political defiance. Government forces were alerted but the small Covenanting band responsible dispersed safely into the hills of Nithsdale after the action.
