The Battle

History & Significance

Carpow on the south bank of the Tay near Abernethy was built as a legionary fortress to support Severus permanent conquest of Scotland — a project that died with Severus in 211 AD. Aerial photography and excavation have confirmed a substantial fortress of over 27 acres. When Caracalla abandoned the Scottish project, Carpow was evacuated. The fortress represents Roman administrative determination to hold Scotland permanently.
