History & Significance

After Beornwulf of Mercia was defeated at Ellendun by Egbert, East Anglia seized the moment to assert independence. When Beornwulf invaded East Anglia to reassert control he was killed by the East Angles. His successor Ludeca also invaded and was also killed. These East Anglian victories in 825 and 827 mark the collapse of Mercian hegemony from all directions.
