History & Significance

The Jacobites besieged Fort William (the government's western Highland stronghold) for weeks during the 1745–46 campaign. The garrison under Captain Scott held out. News of Culloden ended the siege. Fort William — built by William III as the cornerstone of government control of the western Highlands — proved its worth in resisting the last serious challenge to its existence.
