History & Significance

After failing to take Hereford in the summer siege, the Scottish Covenanter army under the Earl of Leven captured it on 1 September 1645. The garrison under Sir Barnabas Scudamore surrendered on terms. The fall of Hereford — the Royalist centre of the Marches — was a major blow and left only isolated Royalist garrisons at Goodrich, Raglan, and a few other castles in the border region. The fall coincided with the collapse of the Royalist cause across England after Naseby.
